Eric Smaling's Journey

Delve into the multifaceted life of Eric Smaling, a soil specialist and a former Dutch politician committed to making a difference.

Through Partnering with various organizations over the years, Eric has Transformed Agriculture & Empowered Lives.

Eric’s scientific life covers research and teaching at Wageningen and Twente (ITC) University, The Netherlands, while mainly active in Africa and (to a lesser extent) Asia and Latin America. This also covered supervision of PhD students. After his political side-step (2007-2017), he managed large development programs in Egypt, Ethiopia and West Africa, and co-wrote IFAD’s Rural Development Report 2021 on Food Systems.
